ASCP BOC Announces New CEU Requirement

ASCP BOC

In keeping with the commitment to assure the continued competence of medical laboratory personnel, the ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) developed the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). The CMP provides an opportunity to obtain a wide variety of learning experiences that demonstrate professional competency and dedication to excellence in the workplace.

The goal of the CMP is to demonstrate to the public that laboratory professionals with the designation are performing continuing education activities to stay current in their practice.

The Credential Maintenance Program is required for all individuals who become ASCP certified on or after January 1, 2004. Individuals ASCP certified prior to January 2004 are not required to participate in the program; however voluntary participation is encouraged since continuing education provides personal and professional benefits. CMP must be completed every three years to maintain certification.

For the HT and HTL Certification categories an individual must receive a minimum of 36 points: 1 point in safety, 2 points in the area of certification and the remaining points in area of specialty, management, education, and/or other related laboratory area of interest. Visit elearn.nsh.org to check out webinars to earn your continuing education credits.

NEW for the Certification Maintenance Program

Effective 1/1/2023, all certificate categories will be required to complete one CMP point of continuing education in the area of medical ethics (e.g. HIPPA, compliance,

Confidentiality training.) This will not increase the overall total CMP point required per category. Many institutes provide Medical Ethics training as part of the employee competence assessment.
