As our membership knows, histology and histopathology of biopsy samples are an integral part of disease diagnosis. A large part of a histotech’s daily duties includes staining tissue samples to aid physicians in identifying any abnormalities in a tissue sample.
The advantages of histological staining include:
- It is one of the least expensive morphological methods
- Allows for the study of large sections of the tissue sample
- Can be collected relatively quickly and with little or no risk to the patient
- Gives clinicians an essential diagnostic tool and allows them to examine the internal architecture of various cells and tissues.
We know we are stating the obvious here. Still, it is an excellent opportunity to remind ourselves how our community fits into the overall picture of providing
quality healthcare to patients. It is also worth mentioning that just because we do something as a part of our daily routines does not mean we cannot create a work of art.
The National Society of Histotechnology created the Art of Stain Contest to mark
National Histology Professionals Day and acknowledge that there is a skill, and even a level of artistry, to staining. The annual
Art of the Stain contest begins accepting submissions in February, and the deadline falls in early March−in celebration of Histotechnology Professionals Day. Voting on all submissions was conducted online only. This year, the voting window was open for five (5) days, and we received almost 500 votes. The image with the most votes is selected.
We announced the 2022 winner on March 14th.
