At the heart of histotechnology is a passion for precision, care, and continuous learning—qualities that Lena Spencer embodied throughout her remarkable career. A trailblazer, mentor, and advocate, Lena’s impact on the field and the people within it was profound and lasting. Today, we honor her memory through the Lena Spencer Scholarship Fund, supporting aspiring histotechnicians and histotechnologists on their journey toward certification.
A Leader Who Shaped the Profession
Lena Spencer dedicated more than a decade to leadership within the National Society for Histotechnology (NSH), including three terms as Region Director and two as NSH President. She was instrumental in creating the NSH/CAP HistoQIP Program, a joint effort with the College of American Pathologists that has since helped laboratories around the world improve the quality of their microscopic staining.
Lena’s reach extended well beyond NSH. She served on the HT/HTL Examination Committee for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), contributed to the Health Professions Network Board of Directors, and authored chapters in the widely used textbook Theory and Practice of Histological Techniques. Lena wasn’t just a leader—she was a driving force behind many of the programs and resources histology professionals rely on today.
A Mentor and Friend
More than her titles and accomplishments, Lena was known for her warmth, curiosity, and unwavering belief in others. She led not by giving answers, but by asking thoughtful questions—encouraging peers and proteges to think deeply and grow. Her mentorship left a lasting impression on countless histologists.
As one friend recalled:
“Lena made everyone feel like a friend. She was kind, soft-spoken, and never had an unkind word for anyone. But before her first Diet Coke of the day, she could certainly look a little grumpy! She was an outstanding NSH President and educator, a role model for our profession, and a fierce advocate for histotechnology.”
Lena’s contributions earned her many honors, including Histotechnologist of the Year, NSH Luminary, and Histotechnologist of the Decade in 2020.
A Life of Passion and Compassion
Outside the lab, Lena had a big heart for animals—especially St. Bernards in need of rescue. She found joy in organizing Kentucky Derby parades and treasured time with her family. Lena’s kindness, humor, and dedication left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Her legacy is one of excellence, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to the future of histotechnology.
The Lena Spencer Scholarship Fund
The Lena Spencer Scholarship Fund continues Lena’s legacy by supporting NSH members on their path to certification. Each quarter, three scholarships in the amount of $250 are awarded to help cover the cost of the HT or HTL exam application. If you're an NSH member planning to take your exam within the next six months, we encourage you to apply through the NSH website.
We awarded our first two scholarships in March of this year. Congratulations to Ariel Becker and Katie Denney.
To honor Lena’s passion for education and help future professionals succeed, you can also support the fund by mailing a check to NSH with “Lena Spencer Scholarship Fund” in the memo line. Contributions, while not tax deductible, make a lasting impact in Lena’s name.
