Self Assessment Books

NSH has written a series of fourteen (14) self assessment examination books. Each book provides questions with descriptive answers for preparation of the certification exams.

NSH also offers a CD Rom version of the self assessment series. All fourteen books are contained on this interactive CD. Each topic provides 2 interaction modes: Study (which provides explanations for answers as you go) and Quiz (which allows you to take a practice test).

Self Assessment #1: FIXATION (2nd Edition)

Presents theory and practical questions covering the basics of fixation. Information on routine and special fixatives are included. Descriptive answers are provided.

Self Assessment #2: PROCESSING/DECALCIFICATION (2nd Edition)

Provides questions and descriptive answers on the theory and techniques of decalcification. Information also covers processing methods, chemicals and quality control.

Self Assessment #3: EMBEDDING/SECTIONING (2nd Edition)

Covers steps from the completion of processing until the start of staining. Includes questions and answers on embedding media, tissue orientation, microtomes, knives, knife sharpeners, frozen sectioning, microtomy and troubleshooting.

Self Assessment #4: ROUTINE STAINING (2nd Edition)

Covers routine staining considerations and pertinent facts about the chemistry of staining, in question and descriptive answer format.

Self Assessment #5: IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY, ENZYME HISTOCHEMISTRY, FLOW CYTOMETRY, IN-SITU HYBRIDIZATION AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (2nd Edition)

Developed for teaching as well as self-assessment purposes. Basic through advanced levels of immunology theory and immunologic staining are included along with an introduction to in-situ hybridization, flow cytometry and references for polymerase chain reaction techniques. Included as well, are basic, intermediate and advanced questions on electron microscopy.

Self Assessment #6: MICROORGANISMS STAINING AND IDENTIFICATION

Developed for teaching as well as self-assessment purposes. Basic thru advanced levels of microorganisms, staining and identification. Theory, application and quality control of stains are components of these questions and descriptive answers. Computer diskette available to interact with booklet.

Self Assessment #7: CONNECTIVE TISSUE AND MUSCLE MORPHOLOGY AND STAINING

Self Assessment #8: PIGMENTS, MINERALS AND ARTIFACTS STAINING AND IDENTIFICATION

An excellent teaching guide as it deals with an in-depth study of the morphology, preservation, staining and identification of pigments, minerals and artifacts in tissues. This book is divided into three levels of knowledge, and is comprehensive in many facets of the subjects, including theory and quality control applications. Self Assessment #9: NERVE TISSUE AND SPECIAL TISSUES AND CELLS STAINING AND IDENTIFICATION

Contains questions for experienced and inexperienced histotechnicians. As with previous books, it is divided into two parts. The first part contains questions on staining and identification. The second part restates these questions, indicates the correct answer and expounds on subjects contained in the questions, as well as the rationale for the correct answer. Subjects comprising the questions and answers include theory, application and quality control of staining. Self Assessment #10: CARBOHYDRATE STAINING AND IDENTIFICATION

Booklet was developed for teaching as well as self-assessment. Included are basic, intermediate and advanced levels on carbohydrate staining and identification. Self Assessment #11: LABORATORY OPERATIONS

Contains questions for experienced and inexperienced histotechnicians and histotechnologists on instrumentation, lab math, education, management and regulations. The book is divided into three levels of knowledge - basic, intermediate and advanced. It is one of the best sources of material for not only those preparing for the HT and HTL examinations, but also for supervisors and managers in histopathology.

Self Assessment #12: GROSS DISSECTION AND DESCRIPTION

Provides the theory and practical application of various facets of gross dissection and description. The booklet includes basic, intermediate and advanced levels of instruction to assess your knowledge of gross dissection.

Self Assessment #13: CYTOPREPARATORY TECHNIQUES

Provides the theory and practical application of various facets of cytopreparatory techniques. Included are specimen collection and receipt, processing and staining, and troubleshooting and maintenance. The booklet is not divided into three areas of difficulty. Instead, it is divided into the various preparatory areas.

Self Assessment #14: LABORATORY SAFETY

Provides a comprehensive review of safety topics applicable to laboratory personnel. Included are Agencies, Organizations, Regulations, Precautions. Chemical hazards and biohazards as well as general safety precautions such as electrical, fire, first aid, shipping, ergonomics and radiation are included.
