Scope of Journal
The Journal of Histotechnology publishes original articles dealing with vertebrate histology or cytology, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, marine histology, nuclear histology, veterinary histology, fluorescence and electron microscopy, molecular biology, and case studies describing the use of stains in the analysis of disease in human or animal tissue. Articles dealing with quality control, tricks of the trade, and educational or administrative techniques directly related to these disciplines are also published.
Submission of Manuscripts
All articles should be sent as Microsoft Word™ documents via e-mail to joh@nsh.org. Alternatively, IBM-PC or Macintosh formatted disks may be mailed at the author’s risk to: Jane Jacobi, JOH Managing Editor, 301 Rhodes Engineering Research Center, Clemson University, Clemson, SC 29634-0910. The name, phone number, fax number, and both email and physical addresses of the corresponding author must be included with all submissions. All papers submitted to this journal must be submitted to it exclusively. Every manuscript will be acknowledged. After peer review by at least two outside reviewers, the corresponding author will be notified of the Editor’s decision. Materials will be returned only at the author's request and expense. Every manuscript must be accompanied by a cover letter that addresses the following issues:
Transfer of Copyright: Submission of a manuscript by the author carries with it the right to publish that manuscript, which will then become the sole property of the National Society for Histotechnology. An author submitting a paper funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) must inform the Editor to ensure compliance with this NIH Public Access Policy.
Conflict of Interest: Authors must reveal to the Editor any potential conflict of interest related to their submitted manuscripts. Conflicts of interest which potentially undermine the credibility of published articles include financial or personal relationships, and academic or corporate competition.
Informed Consent: JOH will not publish identifying information, including patients’ names, initials, or hospital numbers, unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent/guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Authors needing an informed consent form can request one from the Editor.
Human and Animal Rights: If the manuscript reports experiments on human subjects, authors must indicate whether the procedures were in compliance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation and with the Helsinki Declaration. If the manuscript reports experiments on animals, authors must indicate compliance with institutional and national guides for the care and use of laboratory animals.
General
All technical manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: Abstract, Key Words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, References, Legends for Illustrations and Tables. Manuscripts submitted for “Technical Notes” should be arranged in the following order: Abstract, Key Words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, Legends for Illustrations and Tables. Authors are encouraged to view the sample Technical Note by clicking here. Quotations must be accurate and fully cited. Permission to reproduce previously published material must be obtained by the author, and a copy of the letter granting permission should accompany the manuscript.
Title Page
The front page of the manuscript should include: (1) title, (2) name(s) of author(s) and degrees/certifications, (3) institute of origin (if the affiliation has changed since the work was done, please indicate both), (4) source of support.
Abstract
The next page should contain an abstract that is a factual summary of the manuscript, not to exceed 200 words.
Key Words
List the key words in alphabetical order at the bottom of the Abstract page. Do not use title words. These words are for indexing purposes.
Text Style
Manuscripts (including tables, references, footnotes, and legends for illustrations) should be formatted double-spaced with 1-inch margins for printing in portrait orientation on 8 ½” x 11” paper. Manuscripts exceeding 15 double-spaced pages will be considered only by invitation.
References
Only works cited in the text should be referenced. References should be in consecutive numerical order, enclosed in parentheses within the body of the text, and listed at the end of the paper. Citations of journal articles should include: author(s), article title (with subtitle, if any), abbreviated journal title, volume number (in Arabic numbers), inclusive pages, and year. Citations of chapters in books should be referenced as follows: author(s), title of chapter, book title, edition (if applicable), editors, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, and inclusive pages. Unpublished data, personal communications and submitted manuscripts will not be accepted as references. A paper "In Press" should be listed only if it has been accepted by the journal and can be verified by a letter of acceptance. Authors are solely responsible for bibliographical accuracy.
Illustrations
Illustrations consist of all materials that cannot be set in type, such as photographs, drawings, graphs, charts and tracings. Every illustration must have a descriptive legend. Illustrations may be submitted electronically to joh@nsh.org, or mailed on disk formatted for either IBM-PC or Macintosh. Images must be sent as separate electronic files in CMYK mode for four-color separation and at no less than 300 dpi in one of the following formats: TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, PHOTOSHOP, PICT or EPS. Provide a scale bar or original magnification for any photomicrograph. Illustrations in color can be reproduced, but only at the author's expense. Each individual color illustration will be billed at $200. NSH member authors are provided two color illustrations at no charge. Composites are treated as a single illustration.
Tables
Tables are most effective when they are self-explanatory and when they supplement rather than duplicate the text. Each table must have a title and be referenced in the text.
Page Proofs
Portable Document Format proofs will be sent by email to the corresponding author for final review prior to publication. Page proofs must be returned to the Managing Editor within 48 hours by FAX or electronic mail. Submission of page proofs to the author is merely for corrections of possible typesetting errors. Major changes or revisions made in proofs will not be allowed at this stage.
Offprints
With the proof of the article, the corresponding author will receive an order form for offprints. Orders for offprints cannot be filled at a later date.
