    Award amount: Four $500.00 awards avialable to students. All Student Scholarships are given to the recipient on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for expenses (i.e., books, tuition, registration fees, etc.) must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement. Funds not used within the two year period will revert to NSH.

    Award criteria: Student Scholarship Awards will be made annually to deserving students in approved Schools of Histotechnology. Academic ability and financial need will be the main criteria for selecting each recipient. NSH membership is not required for student scholarships.

    1. Written evaluation by the Education Coordinator or Director of the school. Other evaluations from instructors are welcomed.
    2. Plans for utilization of the scholarship are to be submitted by the nominee. These plans must be completed within two years after the scholarship is awarded.
    3. Permanent address where the reimbursements may be mailed. It is the student’s responsibility to provide a current mailing address in order to receive reimbursements for submitted receipts.

    Award amount: Five ($1000.00) Educational Scholarships. All Educational Scholarships are given to the recipient on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for expenses (i.e., books, tuition, registration fees, etc.) must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement. Funds not used within the two year period will revert to NSH.

    Award criteria: All Educational Scholarships will be made annually to applicants who are pursuing advanced education and know-ledge within the profession of histotechnology and/or actively working toward academic status which may provide eligibility to take the histology certification examination appropriate to your professional registry. The Awards Committee will choose the recipients based on the sincere effort of the applicant and not necessarily upon academic merit. 

     
    II. IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY AWARDS  
     

  • Ventana Medical Systems Immunohistochemistry Award

    Sponsored by Ventana Medical Systems, Inc.

    Award amount: Ventana Medical Systems Inc. sponsors this $1000 award on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for all expenses must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement.

    Award criteria: In addition to the membership qualification, certification in histology is also required. This award will be given annually to a qualified applicant who is pursuing advanced education within the Histotechnology profession, with a specific interest in immunohistochemistry. This award will support educational or professional certification programs that are intended to:

    1. Enhance the immunohistochemistry techniques and methods presently utilized in the nominee’s institution; and/or,
    2. Support the study of new IHC techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominee’s laboratory.

    The Awards Committee will choose the recipient based on working achievement and/or academic merit.

 

  • BioGenex Award for Standardization In Immunohistochemistry

    Sponsored by BioGenex

    Award amount: BioGenex sponsors this award with a $1000.00 grant.

    Award criteria: Because of the technological revolution, it becomes imperative that laboratory procedures become standardized to achieve highly reproducible results with increased efficiencies.

    This award will be presented annually to a NSH member certified in histology, who has contributed to the advancement of histotechnology standardization in any facet of histopathology, to include but not limited to: antigen retrieval, microtomy, staining (automated or manual), i.e., H&E, special stains, immunohistochemistry or image analysis. This may be demonstrated by:

    1. Publication of research or abstract presentations before peers on standardization.
    2. Workshops or teleconferences on histopathology standardization. 

 

  • Dako Award for Excellence In Standardization of the IHC Techniques

    Sponsored by Dako

    Award amount: Dako offers the option of a cash award (grant) of $1500.00 OR a seven day trip to Dako in Santa Barbara, California for a five day training session on IHC procedures and techniques.

    Award criteria: In addition to the membership qualification, certification in histology is required. Candidate must be familiar with and perform IHC techniques on a routine basis, as outlined in their institution’s departmental manual on standardization (Quality Assurance). Award funds are to be utilized to advance the recipient’s education in the field of immunohistochemistry with emphasis on standardization.

 

  • Jules Elias Excellence in Immunohistochemistry Award

    Sponsored by by Dr. Richard W. Cartun, Hartford, Connecticut

    Award amount: This award is sponsored by Dr. Richard W. Cartun, Hartford, Connecticut with a $1000 grant to the recipient.

    Award criteria: This award will be presented annually to an NSH member that is currently utilizing immunohistochemisty in a clinical and or research setting and is nominated by his/her peers for excellence in immunohistochemisty techniques. The nominee must either be HT, HTL, QIHC certified or are QIHC eligible. This grant is intended to:

    1. Enhance IHC techniques and methods presently utilized in the nominee’s institution, and/or
    2. Support the study of new IHC techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominee’s laboratory, and/or
    3. Support continuing education.
     
    III. IN-SITU HYBRIDIZATION  

 

  • Ventana Medical Systems In Situ Hybridization Award

This award will be given annually to a qualified applicant who is pursuing advanced education within the histotechnology profession, with a specific interest in in situ hybridization. This award will support educational or professional certification (HT/HTL/QIHC) programs that are intended to:

    1. Enhance the in situ hybridization techniques and methods presently utilized in the nominee’s institution; and/or,
    2. Support the study of new in situ hybridization techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominee’s laboratory. 

 

  • BioGenex Award for Excellence In In Situ Hybridization

    Award amount: BioGenex sponsors this award with a $1000 grant.

    Award criteria: This award will be presented to a NSH member certified in histology, who is pursuing advanced work in In-Situ Hybridization. This may be supported by:

    1. Publication of a research paper utilizing ISH in a peer reviewed journal.
    2. Presentation of an abstract on ISH at a scientific conference.
    3. The teaching of ISH through workshops, lectures and teleconferences.
    4. Continued and advanced work on ISH in one’s own institution, as evidenced by letters of support from the supervisor, pathologist and peers. 

     Invitrogen Chromogenic In Situ Hybridization Award

    Sponsored by Invitrogen Corporation

    Award amount: Invitrogen Corporation sponsors this award with a $500 grant.

    Award criteria: Award criteria: This award will be presented annually to an NSH member that is pursuing advanced education with a specific interest in Chromogenic In-Situ Hybridization (CISH). This grant is intended to:

    1. Enhance techniques and methods presently utilized in the nominee’s institution, and/or
    2. Support the study of new techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominee’s laboratory, and/or
    3. Support continuing education.

     

IV. LABORATORY AWARDS

  • Ventana Medical Systems IHC/In Situ Laboratory Award

    Sponsored by Ventana Medical System, Inc.

    Award amount: Ventana Medical Systems Inc. sponsors this $3000 award on a reimbursement basis. This award is given to the laboratory on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for all expenses (i.e., books, tuition, registration fees, travel, subscriptions, exams, etc.) must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement.

    Award criteria: At least two members of the laboratory staff must meet the membership qualification. Additionally, certification in histology by at least two members of the laboratory staff is also required. This award will be given annually to a qualified Laboratory that is pursuing advanced education within the histotechnology profession, with a specific focus in immunohistochemistry and/or in-situ hybridization. This award will support the laboratory’s educational initiative through the funding of educational seminars, purchase of educational materials, educational or professional certification (HT/HTL/QIHC) programs for the laboratory that are intended to:

    1. Increase the overall knowledge of the laboratory staff in the field of immunohistochemistry and/or in-situ hybridization.
    2. Enhance the immunohistochemistry and/or in situ hybridization techniques and methods presently utilized in the laboratory; and/or support the study of new IHC and/or in-situ hybridization techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominated laboratory.

    To accomplish this, the award may be used for the following:
    -Attend the NSH Symposium/Convention
    -Educational seminars or teleconferences for the laboratory
    -Fees for on-site speakers
    -Purchase of text or reference books for the laboratory
    -Subscriptions to scientific journals for the laboratory
    -Educational materials for the laboratory
    -Fees for the HT/HTL/QIHC certification exam 

     

  • Franco Visinoni Chief Dreamer Laboratory Award

    Sponsored by Milestone Medical USA

    Award amount: Milestone Medical USA sponsors this $1000 grant

    Award criteria: This award will be given annually to a qualified histology laboratory that currently uses laboratory microwave technology to improve patient care and/or enhance laboratory operations. A minimum of two members of the laboratory staff must meet NSH membership qualifications. This award will support advanced education with a focus on laboratory microwave technology and may be used for the following:

    1. Attend the NSH Symposium/Convention
    2. Educational seminars or teleconferences on laboratory microwave use
    3. Fees for on-site speakers on microwave technology
    4. Purchase of text , reference books or other educational materials on microwave technology for the laboratory 

     

  • Biocare Medical Excellence in Patient Care Laboratory Award

    Sponsored by Biocare Medical

    Award amount: Biocare Medical sponsors this award with a $1500 grant.

    Award criteria: This award will be presented annually to a histology laboratory that exhibits excellence in patient care. Efficient testing turnaround time, error free reporting, willingness to incorporate new techniques, dedication of laboratory staff and extraordinary levels of laboratory performance are qualities that the recipient of this laboratory award exhibits. At least two members of the laboratory staff must meet NSH membership qualification. Additionally, HT or HTL certification by at least two members of the laboratory staff is required. This grant is intended to:

    1. Enhance laboratory efficiency through continuing education
    2. Enhance laboratory techniques presently utilized in the laboratory
    3. Support the study of new techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominated laboratory 

     
     

  • Ann Preece Award

    Sponsored by PolySciences, Inc.

    Award amount: PolySciences, Inc. sponsors this $1000 award on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for all expenses (i.e., books, tuition, registration fees, travel, subscriptions, exams, etc.) must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement.

    Award criteria: This award will be given annually to a qualified applicant who has excelled in working with calcified/decalcified bone, other materials such as stents in vascular research or bioengineering development. The specimens can be human or animal in origin. This award will support educational or professional certification programs that are intended to:

    1. Enhance techniques and methods presently utilized in the nominee’s institution, and/or
    2. Support the study of new techniques under consideration for adoption in the nominee’s laboratory, and/or
    3. Support continuing education or certification.

    The Awards committee will choose the recipient based on working achievement and/or academic merit. The award can be used for continuing education endeavors.
     
     

  • William J. Hacker Memorial Award

    Hacker Instruments

    Award amount: Hacker Instruments sponsors this award with a $500.00 grant.

    Award criteria: This award is presented annually to the best scientific paper or presentation utilizing microwave technology. Any paper written and/or presented between May 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008 will be eligible.
     
     

  • Leica Leadership In Management Award

    Leica Microsystems

    Award amount: Leica Microsystems sponsors this $3000 award on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for all expenses (i.e., books, tuition, registration fees, travel, subscriptions, exams, etc.) must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement.

    Award criteria: This award will be given annually to an experienced or recently promoted manager, assistant manager, or supervisor who is expected to provide management leadership within their current role. The individual exemplifies the qualities of a dedicated leader in communication and/or interpersonal skills.

    The Awards Committee will choose the recipient based on working achievement and/or academic merit. The award can be used for continuing education endeavors.
     
     

  • Leica Leadership In Teaching Award

    Leica Microsystems

    Award amount: Leica Microsystems sponsors this $1,000 award on a reimbursement basis. Receipts for all expenses (i.e., books, tuition, registration fees, travel, subscriptions, exams, etc.) must be sent to the NSH office for reimbursement.

    Award criteria: This award will be given annually to an individual dedicated to teaching Histotechnology exemplifying the qualities of a dedicated teacher sharing their knowledge with others and advancing the growth of the profession of Histotechnology. The nominee can be an instructor, technician/technologist, or supervisor.

    The Awards Committee will choose the recipient based on working achievement and/or academic merit. The award can be used for continuing education endeavors.
     
     

  • J.B. McCormick M.D. Award

    Sponsored by McCormick Scientific

    Award amount: This awared is generously sponsored by Dr. McCormick through McCormick Scientific. The award consists of a functioning exact replica of an 1800 Liberkuhn Compass Microscope and an eight book boxed set of The Science Heritage Library, concerning the history of the microscope and histotechnology.

    Award criteria: Presented for outstanding and exceptional service to the National Society for Histotechnology.

    Selection of the recipient for this award will be made by the Awards Committee in consultation with Dr. McCormick. The Awards Committee may elect to not consider those nominations they feel inappropriate for this coveted award. It should not be assumed that the award will be given on an annual basis.
     
     

  • Histotechnologist Of The Year Award

    Award criteria: This award will be made annually to the Histologic Technician/Histotechnologist, who, in the opinion of the Awards committee, best exemplifies the qualities of dedication and service to the profession of Histotechnology.
     
     

  • Lee G. Luna Foreign Travel Scholarship

    Award amount: This award is sponsored by Surgipath Medical Industries, Inc., Richmond, Illinois. The nominee will be selected by the NSH Awards Committee and shall be the recipient of:

    1. Up to $6000.00 to be used to support costs for study and/or obtaining histotechnological education abroad (outside the U.S.A.).
    2. A copy of Mr. Lee Luna’s book entitled, Histopathologic Methods and Color Atlas of Special Stains and Tissue Artifacts.

    This award will be presented each year that a nominee has been selected. The award recipient will be recognized at the awards banquet during the annual NSH Symposium/ Convention.

    Award criteria: 1. The applicant/nominee must be an NSH member who has been active for at least two (2) consecutive years immediately prior to application/nomination and whose primary job description is the performance of histopathologic techniques.

    2. Applicants for this award must not have been the recipient of this award within the past 5 years. Applicants who have not been chosen previously are encouraged to reapply.

     
     

  • Rosemary And Donald Ostermeier Memorial Award

    Award criteria: This award is presented annually to the recipient that, in the opinion of the Awards Committee, embodies the qualities of dedication and devotion to their patients, profession, co-workers, staff and place of employment. The nominee must be a current member of the NSH, with membership of at least five years prior to nomination. Additionally, certification in histology is required.

  • The Newcomer-Newcomer Regional Awards

    Award amount: Newcomer Supply sponsors these awards with a $500 scholarship to each of nine regions on a reimbursement basis.

    Award criteria: : This award will be available annually to qualified applicants from each of the nine NSH regions based on financial need to attend a histotechnology meeting/symposium on a state, regional or national level. A qualified applicant will be a 1st time attendee or a returning attendee that has not attended a meeting within the past five (5) years. Applicants must be a member in good standing of NSH. Winners will be selected by a random drawing from all qualified applications submitted from their region and notified by their region director by August 1st.

    Award amount: Hacker Instruments, Winnsboro, SC sponsors this award with a $500.00 grant to the state society submitting the winning newsletter.

    Award criteria: This award is given annually to the state newsletter which in the opinion of the Awards Committee, best satisfies the following.

    1. Reflect state, regional, and national news (clarity).
    2. Have articles that are beneficial to the histology laboratory and are fully referenced (content).
    3. Edited such that all entries are clear and to the point. Grammatical errors should be absent (neatness).
    4. Present itself in an attractive manner throughout the issue.

  • Website Of The Year Award

    Award amount: The National Society of Histotechnolgy sponsors this award with a plaque and a $500.00 grant to the state or regional society that submits the winning website.

    This award is given annually to the state or regional website which in the opinion of the Awards Committee, best satisfies the following.

    Award criteria: The state or regional website will be judged on:
    1. Function, accessibility and ease of navigation.
    2. Visual design and appeal.
    3. Content that is current and reflects state, regional and national news.
    4. Creativity, originality and technology.

    Websites will be judged by the Awards Committee during the time frame of June 1st – June 15th.

     
     

  • Individual Membership Incentive Award

    Award amount: This award, sponsored by Hacker Instruments, Fairfield, New Jersey is in the amount of $300.00 and is accompanied by a certificate.

    Award criteria: This award is presented to any qualified member of the National Society for Histotechnology who recruits the largest number of new applicants, or past members with a lapsed membership of at least 24 months. This award covers the period of September 1 through August 31. Employees of manufacturers and scientific distributors are not eligible to participate.

    Each membership application must contain the name of the current member who recruited them for appropriate credit. The recorded date is the date the application is received at the National Office.

     
     

  • State Membership Incentive Award

    Award amount: This award, sponsored by Hacker instruments, Fairfield, New Jersey is in the amount of $300.00 and is accompanied by a certificate.

    Award criteria: This award shall be presented to the state society with the largest net increase of new members, or past members with a lapsed membership of at least 24 months (Canada constitutes a state). This award covers the period of September 1 to August 31.

    Award amount: A $250.00 honorarium is given annually to one faculty member, in recognition of their first presentation at the annual NSH Symposium/Convention.
     
     

  • Poster Session Awards

    Award amount: The winning poster from the VIR and Clinical categories will each receive a $250.00 honorarium. Vendor posters receive honorable mention.

    Award criteria: Poster presentations at the annual Symposium/Convention are categorized as Veterinary, Industry and Research (VIR), Clinical, or Vendor/Product Development. Posters are judged on technical content and appearance.
     
     

  • NSH Membership Drawing

    Sponsored by the National Society for Histotechnology

    Award amount: The recipient’s receive complimentary registration, six half day unlimited workshops and a banquet ticket for the following year’s Symposium/Convention.

    Award criteria: All NSH members as of August 1 of the current year are eligible for this award. The drawing takes place at the Annual General Membership Meeting. Two (2) names are randomly drawn for this award and presence is not required to win.
     
     

  • Book Drawing

    Authors, John Bancroft and Marilyn Gamble, sponsor this award.

    Award amount: One (1) member receives an autographed copy of “Theory and Practice of Histological Techniques” by John Bancroft and Marilyn Gamble.

    Award criteria: All members who attend the Annual Membership Meeting will automatically be eligible and entered for this drawing. The drawing is held at the Annual General Membership Meeting.
