Associate in Science, Histologic Technology

This limited access program, accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) enables the graduate to sit for the ASCP Histologic Technician examination. Students who pass the HT (ASCP) exam will be eligible for Florida licensure in histotechnology through the Board of Clinical Laboratory Personnel, Department of Health. Students are evaluated for acceptance into the program based on academic criteria (completion of prerequisite courses) and interview. Selected histologic technology courses are formatted for Web-based and hybrid delivery; therefore, computer skills with Internet access is a program requirement. Distance students are welcome. Students may find it difficult to work during the practicum phase of the education (last two semesters) due to the number of required contact hours per week. Students will be expected to perform in a professional manner during the campus and practicum phases and must have excellent coordination skills.

Associate in Science, Histologic Technology

The A.S. degree is designed for students who are looking for immediate entry into a career upon graduation. Most program courses directly relate to the identified career area. The remaining courses are comprised of general education courses.

The Associate in Science degree in Histologic Technology, teaches the knowledge of tissue and cellular structure. Students will develop skills in preparing, fixing processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining tissue, including brain, kidney, bone and muscle tissue. Actual surgical specimens are used in the laboratory settings.

As part of the program a supervised internship at an affiliated hospital, research or private laboratories is required. Students who enroll with a BS degree from a regionally accredited college or university after program completion sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology's Histotechnologist certification exam. Keiser University’s Associate of Science degree in Histotechnology prepares students to work as Histotechnicians in a variety of anatomic pathology laboratory settings. The Histotechnology program is designed to develop technical and intellectual skills as well as developing individuals with a commitment to quality patient care, a passion for the profession, and continued growth within the field. Non-traditional Histology Training (web): I.U. has been teaching HT students at a distance since 1995. The program is taught online to students employed in histology labs across the United States. Alternately, the previously certified HT(ASCP) may apply for special credit in lieu of completion of the certificate course work. In other words, Indiana University will award you 24 credit hours for you ASCP certification. Required general-education courses may be transferred from any accredited college or university or you can complete them through the Indiana University School of Continuing Studies independent study courses. NOTE: In order for I.U. to award the degree a minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed from I.U. (special credit does not apply). The School of Histologic Technicians (HT) is a 7 month laboratory NAACLS-accredited certificate program working with tissues from operating rooms, doctors' offices and autopsy. During the 7 am - 3:30 pm program, Monday through Friday, students learn the theory and technical skills in the Histology laboratory, related to infections, cancer and tissue abnormalities.

DMCUL, School of Histotechnology, NAACLS accreditation, is a unique program contenting both Histotechnician (HT) and Histotechnologist (HTL), curriculum and clinical rotation experience. The graduates are eligible to take the HT, ASCP exam with an Associate Degree in Applied Science and HTL, ASCP exam with a Bachelor Degree in Science. The curriculum courses work concurrently with the practice lab and clinical rotation, consisting of: accessioning, distribution, tissue processing, embedding, microtome, automatic and manual staining, special staining and Cytopreparation.

DMCUL is a well diversity campus, housing over nine hospitals, where students develop skill sets in Immunohistochemistry, Enzyme Histochemistry and Electron Microscopy. The practice lab is a six months on hand experience, upon completion students submit selective blocks, H&E and special stain slides to Medical Advisory, for Competency Assessments, before entering into the Histology Department Clinical Laboratories rotation, an additional eight weeks clinical rotation gives the students work experience.

The Histotechnology program at UMMC's School of Health Related Professions offers a bachelor degree program as an opportunity for those with 60 hours of specific college credit to gain entry-level training and education in histotechnology.

Histotechnology centers on the detection of tissue abnormalities and the treatment for the diseases causing the abnormalities. The histotechnologist processes and prepares human and animal tissues with dyes and chemicals so tissues can be evaluated microscopically. The stained tissues can lead to routine and special identification of bacteria, fungi, cancer, and tissue structure abnormalities for pathological diagnosis.

The histotechnologist performs standardized lab tests that include tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. These tasks require the histotechnologist to be patient, attentive to detail and to have a knowledge of anatomy, pathology, physiology, microbiology, immunology, molecular biology and chemistry. 

Employment opportunities in the histotechnology field continue to grow. Most often histotechnologists work in anatomic pathology laboratories within hospitals and clinics. However, careers also exist in pharmaceutical, veterinary, biomedical and academic laboratories. 

About the program

Histotechnology offers its bachelor degree program across five semesters (22 months) of academic and clinical education. Students learn standardized lab skills and methods, such as tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning and staining, necessary to become a histotechnologist. 

Following satisfactory completion of all requirements, students will be awarded the bachelor of science in histotechnology (BSHTL) degree from the University of Mississippi. Graduates are eligible to apply to take the national certification examination to become certified as a histotechnologist.

Traditional HTL level program in the School of Clinical Laboratory Sciences located at Carolinas College of Health Sciences in Charlotte, NC. This is an accelerated 31-week full time on-campus post bachelor’s certificate program. The program has two classes a year starting in January and May. Applications are considered on a rolling cycle with first consideration to those submitted by June 1 for the next year’s enrolment. This program offers a well-rounded educational experience by offering high-quality didactic, student laboratory, and clinical experiences to produce a highly trained and skilled histotechnologist. The 12 month certificate program begins in July of each year and combines both didactic and practical training. Histotechnician Program

This is a two-year Histotechnician program offering an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree.
Cost: The typical cost of the program for a full-time student is the current CCRI tuition for five semesters, books, lab coats, uniforms and travel expenses to the clinical sites. The total cost of a two-year program is approximately $5000.
CCRI accepts approximately 15 students into the Histotechnician Program each May. If students have prior college education or clinical experience, they can gain advanced placement into the program.

The Medical University of South Carolina offers both traditional and distance education.

UTHSC Certificate Program in Histotechnology

This 22-credit hour, 1-year, part-time certificate program provides clinical histotechnology training to prepare health professionals for a career in a histology laboratory. The courses are a combination of online, on-campus, and clinical practicums performed in accredited laboratory settings. The program requires a prerequisite bachelor’s degree and runs January through December. After completion of the certificate program, graduates are eligible to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) exam offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Masters of Cytopathology Practice Program

Unique in the United States, this program is a master’s level dual cytotechnology (CT) and histotechnology (HTL) program. This 22-month post baccalaureate program provides students with ASCP certification eligibility in two highly desirable fields. In addition to routine and advanced histotechnology practice, this program provides the student with cytopathology expertise at the microscope and with a foundation in molecular methods. Classroom sessions are supplemented with extensive laboratory training as well as with 12 weeks of cytology and histology clinical rotations in anatomic pathology laboratories across the South.

Histologic Technician Program AAS

The Program culminates into an Associate Degree of Applied Science. The Program offers a full-time track that can be completed in two years and a part-time track that will take three years to complete. A new class starts each fall semester. The student attends lectures and participates in student lab activities at the Coleman College of Health Sciences. Further hands-on knowledge is gained during clinical experiences in Texas Medical Center institutions and various other hospitals and clinics throughout the area. Classes conducted at these locations can begin as early as 7:00 a.m. The student is responsible for transportation to and from these locations and for parking fees.

After graduation, the student is eligible to take a national certification exam and gain the title of Histologic Technician.

Histotechnicians (HTs) play a fundamental role in the allied health profession. They are members of an anatomic pathology team who employ histologic technology to prepare tissue samples for analysis, diagnose diseases or conduct research on tissue specimens. The sophisticated techniques used by HTs play an important role in confirming patient diagnosis and establishing patient treatment.

Inova Histology Program curriculum objectives will meet the standards set by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science which includes the qualifications and responsibilities of the HT Program Administration, and HT curriculum requirements in the area of instruction, learning experiences, and evaluations.

The RMH HTL Program is a one year school that includes six months of lecture and student lab followed by six months of rotation through six hospital histology labs. Each student will rotate through all six rotation sites for four weeks. Rotations will be in RMH (Rockingham Memorial Hospital) Histology Lab, Norfolk General Hospital Immunohistochemistry Lab, Norfolk General Hospital Histology Lab, Martha Jefferson Hospital Histology Lab, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center Histology Lab, and Williamsburg Regional Medical Center Histology Lab. Block teaching will be utilized in the didactic segment of the program with progression of courses from Fixation, Processing/Embedding, and Microtomy to Staining. Many of the lectures will be projected by video-teleconferencing equipment from Norfolk and Williamsburg to RMH. The rest of the lectures will be in person. Two way communications will be utilized in the video-teleconferencing. The entering students will be required to have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 credits in biology and chemistry (minimum of 12 credits in each of chemistry and biology) prior to beginning the program. A certificate will be awarded at the completion of the school.
