Fixation on Histology

In Andre’s words: 

I had a guy on my team who wanted to do it too, and he didn’t like public speaking (presenting the certificate to the presenter and giving any announcements to the class). I loved it, so we divided the work and became ambassadors! From there, I started working in the workroom. If you love the “behind the scenes” type of work, this is for you! I put up signs, made sure speakers were in the right room, and that members were getting credit for the correct classes. From there, I joined the Convention Committee and worked with vendors to ensure they had everything they needed for exhibit time. I also got to work with them to make donations to NSH for the raffle! While on the Convention Committee, I served one year on the Convention Program Committee before the world shut down because of the pandemic. That committee was fun! It focuses on selecting the right topics/courses for the annual NSH Convention. Last but not least, my current focus is Region Director! I get to work closely with the other Region Directors and NSH staff to help shape the future of the Organization. 

I love interacting with people, so the most rewarding part is building relationships. From taking tickets at the front of classes, announcing the next speaker, putting up signs, giving out prizes, picking classes, and more, I have made enumerable memories with really cool histotechs along the way! 

NSH asked Andre if he had any advice for members thinking about getting more involved with NSH.  Andre said, “Don’t think about it; join a committee, be an ambassador, put your name in the hat to represent your region. Whatever it is, just get plugged in. If you don’t know what the right “fit” is, reach out to me, I’ll connect you to the right person. Join and start making memories!”
