We conducted an interview with Avantik Student Scholarship recipient, Kyleigh Holm, who told us more about her ambitions in the histology profession.
What made you decide to pursue a career in histology?:
"My father's unexpected passing in 2014 after his vigorous battle with multiple cancers: pancreatic, bladder, and skin carcinoma, was a significant event in my life. Upon conducting research, I discovered that I was most interested in learning more about the medical team that assists a cancer patient in the diagnosis stage of their care. Along with my loved one’s support, this has heavily influenced my plans at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, School Of Health Professions in Houston, TX to be a histologic technologist student."
How will this scholarship help you achieve your goals?:
"This opportunity will allow me to expand my education within the medical field in effort to help others one microscopic slide at a time!"
What advice do you have for other students who are interested in histology?:
"If you consider yourself to be a tactile learner and the medical field intrigues you, I highly recommend looking into the world of Histology! While laboratory personnel are primarily in the background of a patient's care, our work is significant in ensuring patients receive exceptional medical results and diagnoses."
What advice do you have for other students interested in applying for scholarships?
"Applying for scholarships can be a very rewarding process. Simply sharing your story or beliefs can inspire others to assist you on your academic journey. In my opinion, it is definitely worth the time and energy!"
What are your plans after you graduate from your program?:
"While I am eager to get into the work force as soon as possible, I have also considered continuing my education to become a Pathologist's Assistant. Regardless, I am confident I belong within the pathology department!"
