NSH Teleconference: What's so "Big" About Macrosections in the Histology Laboratory?

Date:
25 May 2011

Presented by Jennifer Lehmann, BS, HTL(ASCP), Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI

It takes a lot of time, cassettes and reagents to gross an entire prostate, then processing, embed, section, stain and coverslip all the cassettes/blocks/slides. Then the pathologist has to take these individual slides, and map them back into a 3-D image in their mind. Macrosections are an alternative method of processing for certain tissue types, from entire prostates, cross-sections of colon, large pieces of brain, etc. The resulting slides prove to be a more reliable methodology for diagnosing patient tissue. This teleconference will provide a learning experience in the surgical grossing, processing, microtomy, and staining (H&E, IHC) techniques for Macrosections.
