NSH Teleconference: Violence in the Workplace: What can we do to Prepare?
Presented by David Tate, MS, Purdue University, W. Lafayette, IN
This teleconference will address the rising number of acts of violence occurring in the workplace. Why has this phenomenon become so prevalent and especially here in the United States? Are there contributing factors that may precipitate these actions? Remember the phrase “going postal?” Is there a difference between the violence we’ve seen occur in such places as Columbine and what we saw occur at the Discovery Channel or the shooting of the physician in the emergency room of Johns Hopkins? Are there distinct types of personalities that are predisposed to this kind of violence? What is the catalyst of these acts of violence and can we mitigate these from happening if we recognize the warning signs. What are the warning signs? Are there job situations that are more prone to the potential of workplace violence? Are workers today facing more stress or is this just a sign of the times? Is the easy access to weapons or our gun laws contributing parts of this phenomenon? This teleconference will bring these issues to bear knowing that there is no one concrete and definable trait to identify or any one viable means of eliminating this in today’s world. How would you prepare your agency or company for the possibility of workplace violence?
