NSH Teleconference: Taking it to The Bio "Bank": The Journey of a Biospecimen to a Biomarker

Date:
26 Oct 2011

Presented by Barbara Pruetz, BS, HTL(ASCP), Biobank, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI

A BioBank can build the bridge between the clinical pathologic diagnostic markers, to the novel biomarkers that are predictive of disease and treatment. Modifications to standard operating protocols of collecting and handling well annotated tissue specimens, as well as specimen preservation will be outlined, with the aim and goal to fulfill the needs of down stream applications: such as, Tissue MicroArray, Laser Capture Microdisection, In-Situ Hybridization. These techniques come with new histological challenges, pushing the conventional preservation methods aside to make a researcher think of “fit-for-purpose” solutions prior to the collection of the biological specimen.
