NSH Teleconference: Estrogen and Progesterone Testing Standardization for Breast Cancer

Date:
24 Aug 2011

Presented by Beth Sheppard, MBA, HT(ASCP), Ventana Medical Systems, Tucson, AZ

Accurate estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR) IHC assessment is critical for therapy-based treatment of breast cancer. However, there has been laboratory testing variability reported to include false-negative results. Lack of standardization in the pre-examination procedures, test validation, and good quality control is thought to be the major reason for testing errors. Additionally, variability in interpretive scoring and reporting techniques has been noted. In an effort to standardize ER and PR testing, American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) have published testing, scoring and reporting guidelines for laboratories. This teleconference will review the significance of ER/PR testing to the patient’s treatment, implementation of the ASCO/CAP guidelines, and the validation of testing.
