NSH Teleconference: The Cell Cycle and Cancer

Date:
27 Jul 2011

Presented by Traci DeGeer, BS, HT(ASCP)HTL, QIHC, Ventana Medical Systems, Tucson, AZ

The cell cycle is described as an orderly sequence of events where two cells are formed from the division of one single cell. Cancer occurs when the normal events of the cell cycle go awry and cell division is no longer regulated. This presentation will explain the normal cell cycle and examine a few points at which disruptions can occur on the genetic or protein level. Immunohistochemistry is often used to diagnose cancer, by detecting changes that may be due to disruptions in normal cell cycle activity. We will examine ways of detecting these disruptions in some common tumor types.
