Getting Employer Support to Attend

The five days of the 36th Annual Symposium/Convention will be the most cost-effective professional development choice you have all year. You will experience a full year of benefits in the form of new and greater knowledge that you can apply directly to your duties in the lab.

Use this letter (Word doc) to assist you in gaining support from your supervisor. Feel free to customize it however you would like.

Here are more tips on getting employer support for attending the 36th Annual Symposium/Convention:

1. Share the poster abstracts and workshop handouts with your colleagues. Or offer to prepare and deliver a short presentation and Q&A to your colleagues to share what you learned. That way others in your lab will get the benefits of your attendance, too.

2. Create your sample workshop schedule and the list of vendors you plan to visit to explain what you plan to get out of attending and how that will benefit your work and facility.

3. Create a detailed list of expenses associated with attendence (registration, travel, food). At the same time demonstrate ways to be cost effective by offering to share a hotel room or attend only key days of the convention. Remember sessions are sold a la carte for the S/C so you can create a schedule that not only fits your budget but also your time allowed away from the lab.

4. If your hospital or certifying agency requires continuing education, remind your supervisor that attendees at the S/C receive a certificate documenting their participation in continuing education.
