The Legislative Committee is charged with the task of keeping informed of any legislation affecting the health care field, veterinary, industry and research fields, particularly that which pertains to histotechnology. The Committee also stays abreast of licensure activities in the State Legislatures that would affect those practicing in the field of histotechnology.

Annual Report
It is apparent from the calls and emails I have received this year there is some confusion on this committee, NSH and our role, either by me or the constituents.
Members are under the impression that the NSH /Legislative Committee can step into a particular states legislative process and stop or amend a bill in progress. At times they are quite insistent the Legislative chair has this power.
Because of this the legislative committee has set the following goals:

The following are the goals and objectives for the legislative chair and committee:
1.Immediate goals within 3 months:
a) Follow up contact with people who signed up with interest in serving on committee
b) Contact Regional Directors in area without a member on committee for possible names
c) Have State/Regions select a representative to report back to committee chair any activity
d) Continue to work with Carol Barone as she finalizes her position paper
2.One goal complete 2011:
a) To better understand the whole position as Legislative chair
b) Continue to work with Vinnie DellaSperenza to complete the State Licensure Tool Kit
c) Educate the membership on the process of drafting a bill, hopefully to be included with Tool Kit.
d) Continue to assist with position paper if necessary
e) Continue to recruit members from each Region to serve on committee
f) Do a better job of utilizing the NSH office staff for assistance in completing these goals
3. Two Year Goal 2012:
a) Finish Licensure Tool kit if not complete
b) Fulfill this position to the best of my ability
c) Address any new responsibilities requested by the President or BOD
d) Evaluate where the committee stands as a whole
I have read and reread the Legislation Committee job description sent to me from the office. It is a big responsibility to fill
